Budget Deck: Kagero (Overlords)

I've been playing Vanguard since it's release in the States and my first and favorite clan even now is Kagero. Especially Dragonic Overlord. I've tried to update my deck whenever new support came out but the ridiculous prices of Overlords always stopped me from building it. Eventually I moved to Gear Chronicle, letting my Kagero deck slowly fall behind.

When I heard that Kagero was going to get a Legend Deck supporting Overlords I was so excited. I could pull out my outdated Kagero Deck and finally make it competitive again. Dragonic Overlord the Legend is just great. Finally a budget restanding Kagero. Oh man, am I excited to write about this.

Grade 3

Burn everything in this world to ash
with your apocalyptic fire!
Obviously we're going to run 4 Dragonic Overlord "the Legend". If you didn't realize it yet, it's basically the exact same thing as "the Great": Attack a rearguard and restand. Some people call it a "glorified retire", but the extra three drive checks are really important. It can filter out unneeded cards from your hand and add extra pressure to the attack on the vanguard. To top it all off it searches the top 5 cards of the deck for a Flame Dragon on ride. It's good, it's budget, it's everything we've(or at least I've) been waiting for in Kagero.

For backup, run 4 of the original Dragonic Overlord. OG DO's skill is terrible, but it has the Overlord name and allows your Overlord support to be used. It's cheap and it works.

Grade 4

The Legend Deck comes with a complete G-Zone, including 2 copies of "the Ace" and 4 copies of L'Express, but I recommend that you replace a copy of Vortex Desire with a copy of Mustafa. Since they can use each other for their G-Flip costs, running 1 Mustafa, 1 Vortex over 2 Vortex adds another option without losing anything. So yeah. Options are always good.

Grade 2

Because two heads are better
than one
The Legend Deck comes with a really solid Grade 2 lineup so I'm going to be brief.

Nehalem 2.0 is great for making columns

Berserk Lord's retire is just great and goes perfectly with "the Legend" and "the Ace"

Bahr's a 15k Interceptor that can send back Flame Dragons to stop deck out.

If you can somehow get your hands on them Neoflame and Burnout are great. Burnout's also getting a reprint sometime soon so look forward to that.

Burning Horn's a thing, but it's outclassed by Nehalem 2.0.

Striken tech-in is fun. Gives nice pressure and early defense.

Grade 1

Conroe. Broken Before, Broken Now
Stride Fodders are pretty much mandatory in this deck. Since "the Legend" and "the Ace" require you to discard Grade 3 Flame Dragons, you don't want to use them to pay for stride. Running Stride Fodders at 3-4 allows you to stride while keeping Grade 3's in hand to pay for costs.

The Legend Deck gives you Aermo, but it's best to run Rampart Dragon or Rinocross as your Perfect Guard. Since they are Flame Dragons they can be added to hand by "the Legend"'s skill.

General Conroe is one of the best things to happen to Kagero. By including four copies in your deck you increase the chance of riding into "the Legend" and make a normally counterblast heavy deck have no problems.

Tahr is good to power up columns and seach out fodder for "the Legend".

Calamity Tower and Gojo are commonly used in many Kagero decks, since they help dig through the deck.

Aethonic and Grom can be used if for some reason Conroe isn't enough.

Grade 0

There is a choice between two starters: Fargo and Hero Undeux. Fargo applies extra pressure to "the Legend"s attack and Undeux can search out Grade 3's for "the Legend"s cost. It's a choice between power and consistency and completely up to you.

For triggers, run 12 Crit or 8 Crit 4 Draw. If you decide to run Draw Triggers be sure to use Gattling Claw to snipe off starters.

Decklist:
NOTE: This is only an example decklist and should only be used as a base. I recommended that you create your own decklist through your own testing. I found this decklist to fit me, but it is up to you to find a decklist that fits you.

Effectiveness: 9.5/10

Price: $40-50

Competitive: Yes

Final Words: Kagero is in a really strong spot at the moment, as well as budgetfighting. The sheer amount of pressure that this deck can apply could win the game outright. Coupled with an amazing finisher in the form of Nouvelle L'Express the deck is just great. This deck is perfect for those new to the game, as well as those who have been playing since day one. Great place to begin playing Kagero and hey, it's the cheapest deck I've written about yet. Pick up a copy of a legend deck soon and build this awesome deck!

I hope you put in a clan suggestion on the "Something New" blog. At the moment, the comments say Angel Feather and Claret, albeit there are only 3 comments. If you'd like to see a certain clan featured in the next blog please post your suggestion on the "Something New" blog.

Until next time!

  6. There are other latest Kagero units that might be suited for this deck:

    Some of the budget units:
    Lizard Soldier, Conroe
    Energy Flame, Aethonic
    Dragon Knight, Shakur
    Divine Dragon Knight, Abd Salam

    Other cards to be consider:
    Dragonic Blademaster "Kouen"
Supreme Heavenly Emperor Dragon, Blazing Burst Dragon
Flame Emperor Dragon King, Root Flare Dragon
    Flare Arms, Ziegenburg

    Just a suggestion.

Hopefully there will be a new article for Kagero Decks.
