Budget Deck: Genesis (Witch)

I'm pretty sure essentially every Cardfighter is hyped for G Set 11. I sure am. Although the set introduces an entirely new Genesis subclan (Amaruda), that's not what I want to cover today. We're gonna look at one of the more overlooked subclans: Witches. Most of the support has been passed over because it isn't very good, and some of the Witches have actually fallen in price since the reveal. This is a golden opportunity to pick up the deck while it's cheap.

I actually got the original list for this deck from Chang and made a few minor edits before presenting it. The build is Fennel Stall, a grind deck meant to keep up constant advantage using Fennel's legion to add Perfect Guards and Heals to the hand and recycle triggers through legion and Dreaming Dragon. It can build formations from the the soul, and plays like a fatigue deck. It's the polar opposite from Mint Aggro, and either tries to deck the opponent out or kill the opponent after whittling them down after repeated use of Legion.

Fennel is going to be the only Grade 3 in the deck as a four of. The deck doesn't mind sitting on G2 for a couple turns and you will probably Legion more than stride. Running nothing but Fennel also gives us more room in our Grade 1 and Grade 2s. If you're uncomfortable with just 4 G3s you can run Anise, who will be dropping in Set 11. I guess she has potential, but she's just unnecessary. Here's her complete skill:

Risen Star Witch, Anise
[ACT](VC): Legion 20000 "Starburst Witch, Star"
[AUTO](VC)[1/Turn]: [Counter Blast (1)] When your card with "Witch" in its card name is put into the drop zone from your soul, you may pay the cost. If you do, call that card to (RC), and if this unit is Legion, draw a card.
[AUTO](VC): [Soul Blast (3)] When your unit with "Witch" in its card name is placed on (RC) during the turn that this unit Legion, you may pay the cost. If you do, Counter Charge (1)/Soul Charge (1).

She's just so... weird. Her 1/Turn call isn't really necessary due to the fact that most of your Witches do that themselves, minus the draw. Her Soulblast skill can balance costs well, but requires soul to do so. She might have room as a tech-in 1-2 for late game, but she isn't good enough in my opinion. In addition, her legion mate is kinda bad, as it uses CB the deck needs for the on-ride and calling from the soul. It makes numbers I guess!?!?

Another card I wanted to cover was the Quintet Wall, who is really interesting. Quintet Walls have almost completely fallen out of the meta due to the fact that they simply don't have enough shield to guard most VG attacks at this point in the game. A Quintet Wall on average gets 25-30k shield per usage, while most Vanguards swing for a 26k minimum, usually more than that. Thus, I'm going to recommend not using the Quintet Wall. The deck doesn't want to waste the CB, and the discard to add it to hand still makes it so that you aren't actually plussing. Fennel adding a PG to hand is much more reliable and efficient. Sad I have to shoot her down, but the deck doesn't want it.

Moving on, the last new card is the stride. I might get shot for saying this, but it's actually really nice as a finisher, but only as such. The only time you want to stride into her is if your opponent used up most of their hand in an unsuccessful final turn. She applies crit pressure to the rears and gives them a nice power boost to make numbers. Other than her, your other finisher options are Vanargandr, who is expensive as heck right now, and Witch of Holy Water, who is cheap as heck. Both Witch strides are good finishers in the proper situation.

Now that I've got past the new cards, the actual list is pretty simple. The G2s include 12k attackers for early game and easy columns, and the units that call themselves from the soul., along with the legion mate, of course. There's alot of tech space in the G1s. The list is actually pretty self-explanatory, so I'm only going to touch on here. Harry is a personal tech of mine that suits the longer games the deck may have, and lets you recycle more cards and keep your CB in check. Skoll is used for turns you can't legion but don't want to neg to stride. Other than that, you should have a full Witch G1 lineup, so you have options to grab with Fennel.

I could dig deeper into the deck, but it really isn't necessary. The deck is actually pretty simple, although it is more complex then it seems. You have to know when to legion, go for the kill, what to grab, when to guard, what to guard with, what to recycle, etc. It might take longer to get ahold of than it looks, but I can't really explain the deck because you need to test it to see how it functions. So if you have any questions, please leave a comment or hop on the Discord.

*Hellsky and Vanargandr are options if you have the money. This is Budgetfight, so I'm going to assume that you don't

Effectiveness: 7.5/10

Price: $40-$50

Competitive: Maybe? Depends on the local scene and current meta.

Final Words: The deck does well against matchups such as Luard, who the deck can out-tank and deck out. The deck doesn't fare well vs Sanc Guard and other decks that will drop the hand and rush. Multiattacks can hurt the deck, also. The deck is kind of matchup reliant, but can tank well and wear down an opponent when used correctly.

Until next time,

  1. how do you do well against Luard if in the end game all he does is recycle all the owls with luards stride cost, make massive columns, and triple crit you. Eventually you are going to die in the end game, i'm kinda curious because i hate luard for the "i set up lol i have 8 cards in hand, have 25k g-guards for nothing, infinite PGs, and a card that will end you if you have no field" gameplay. The only things i guess i am curious about is CBD, Messiahs, Nightrose, 7Runner, and Time Lep match-ups because i haven't experienced witches.

    1. I was really high when I made this, and I guess I forgot how much Luard does recycle... It'll be hard to deck him out. At least you can go hella aggro at the beginning of the game vs him, due to the fact that you'll be able to call out a formation later in the game easy. Against other meta decks, Fennel Grind doesn't do horribly against them? If you get decent luck with your Fennel Grab and recycles, you should be able to outlast their turns.

  2. Very interesting deck profile, might not be for me as the playstyle is unusual, but it still looks fun and different from typical decks.

Might I suggest taking a look into a Blau deck profile? Not necessary, just an idea for future content.

    1. I could take a look at Blaus eventually I guess? Novas are one of the clans I very rarely play... Lol. I'll ~~force Chang to do it~~ get to it eventually, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  3. This deck is kinda cool, but I can't find a single copy of Framboise for it. Do you have any alternative option? Thank you :)

    1. Uhhh, I guess you could do a thing with Witch of Fruit of Knowledge, Rooibos. I don't really like Quintet Walls, but you need a sential with the Witch name so that it can be grabbed by Fennel.
