Set Review: G Clan Booster 4 Gear of Fate

Gear of Fate. A Clan Booster for an already meta clan. But as an avid Gear Chronicle player, I'm not complaining. I like what they did with this, though, by not focusing on helping the meta Time Leap deck and instead made an entire new archetype in the form of Idea Drones, Chronoscommands much more viable, and at least they attempted to make Legions a thing.
First, I'd like to outline what decks got new support and debuted in this set:
  • Idea Drones
  • Chronojet
  • Chronofang
  • Chronoscommand
  • Legion
Idea Drones
Idea Drones are built around supporting the new GR, Deus Ex Machia, Demiurge. Demiurge's skill is broken. Stacking your deck to prepare for the next three turns is broken. Even more so with a glory skill. But! The ridiculous cost of the skill ensures that you're gonna have one use out of it per game, if at all. It ain't to difficult to get 12 ZTBs into the bind zone, but it's gonna take awhile.

Prospatheia Idea-drone's pretty great. Neither of his skills goes to waste, since their timings occur when out of stride, and fills up your bind zone with ZTBs pretty fast. Perfect for setting up Demiurge.

Diaperno Idea-drone's nice for early rush and pressure. The Gear Colossus restriction hurts a little, but nothing to really worry about.

Deus Ex Machina, Ergos is nice on-hit for setting up Demiurge and applies pressure. Not too amazing compared to other on-hit strides, since you get no plus off of it, but it's a good first stride for Demiurge decks.

Kaigomai's pretty sick. It's essentially just a 10k interceptor with resist, but since it takes a ZTB from deck and places it right into the bind zone, it's pretty much a necessity. It isn't splashable outside of Idea Drones, sadly.

Chanomai Idea-drone gets to bind two cards for countercharge 1 and +5000 shield. It's awesome if you pull two ZTBs off of the mill, but like Kaigomai it's Race locked.

Anarchaea is soo good. Recycling and trigger filtering is amazing. Also doesn't minus, which is good. It's a Crit, anyways, so might as well put it into your deck if you're playing a Demiurge deck.

Althinios Idea-drone is dumb. -1 for just a countercharge and the chance of binding a ZTB. Don't run.

Voltaro's great. Soulcharge, Countercharge, Bind Zone tool boxing, and Demiurge setup all in one card.

Itel gets a lotta shield, but considering that once you hit 12 soul you're gonna be using Demiurge, at most it's gonna have 15k shield. Still not bad, tho.

I'm gonna just slap Unhindered here because it's a Colossus. He sucks. 10k base and a pretty meh skill. If it were 11k base I'd actually consider running it, but nope.

Chronojet
First up for Jet support is... CHRONODRAGON GEAR GROOVY! Disregarding it's ridiculous name, GG is just great. Cloning the skills of Gear Dragons in your G-Zone's leads to some ridiculous stuff. Ragnastage anyone? But do note that he does hold onto the costs of cloned abilities, so be wary about your Counterblast. Also, the crazy amount of G-Flips are gonna be perfect for my Blizza Turbo deck, hehe.

Delayed Blazer's just a better Clockfencer, albeit more limited in its use. Mid-battle Time Leap is always good.

Heteroround's a nice one or two-of in Jet decks. It replaces one of your opponent's rearguards, which can screw over rearguard-buffing decks like Neo Nectar and Gold Paladin, for a soulblast 1. But the key thing here, which is seen in the anime, is that it screws over your opponent's stacked deck. Meaning it counters Demiurge. And Tsukuyomk and some Perdition variants too, but no one cares about them anyways shot.

Mesh-kia seems like it would be a better replacement to Gigi, but in Jet decks the soul is under utilized so Gigi can make use of it. Also, you want your Tick Tocks in drop anyways. Mesh-Kia's completely fair game in pretty much every other a Time Leap deck. I'd still tech in one copy in Jet decks, though.

La-ba'shim's Gear Chronicle's first searchable Perfect Guard. It's a good G1 time leap target if you have nothing else and makes a nice tech-in at 1-2 if you don't want to dedicate a play set to it. It's probably gonna be cheap, so I'll be running 4 anyways.

Causality is a pretty interesting card that gives your vanguard more pressure, but G1 space is tight. Run if you can make the room.

Tick-away's almost mandatory at 1 or 2 in Time Leap decks. Recycling your units is so good in Gears. And considering how much you use Time Leap in current Gears decks this thing can send back up to 5-7 cards per turn.

Nextage Reprint @5 per Carton. Sigh. Bushi knows reprints.

Chronofang
Rebellion's a great pressure unit in both Tiger Time Leap and Tiger Demiurge decks. A -2 for +1 Crit and Quadruple Drive Check ain't to be underestimated. And if you bind Ur-watar or Lasina-bel for his field-rearguard cost, the cost becomes a complete wash.

Pandora Chimera... Stinks. It tries to be like Denial Griffin, giving you the ability to control your opponent's field on their turn, but this only rewinds backrow. And it also gives your opponent the option to choose... It works when, like, a single Bruno is in the backrow at 30k so it does have it's uses sometimes. It would be much better if choice was given to the user rather than the opponent.

Steam Fighter, Nani.... Nani? Lel. Anyways, he's a great card. His first skill hits 16k magic numbers with 7 cards in bind zone and hits 21k magic Numbers with a 7k booster with only 5 cards in bind zone. Good stuff. He also has a second skill that calls him from bind after attacking with a Chronofang vanguard. With all the ways you can bind him, he ends up being a better Slash Shade in most cases.

Gear Tabby is Heart Thump Clone for Fang decks... Sorta. It triggers off of getting bound from field rather than your vanguard attacking. This is soo much better for Fang decks, since you probably paid the cost for some skill already and this means you actually plus off of Tabby. Plus > Wash in all cases. There are some times where you can't trigger Tabby at all, but it ain't often.

Shag-kusa... I love that art. It's skill is a bit iffy, but I'd make it work just for that art. Skill would be better if it were on-demand or if she were Grade 1, though.

Lasina-bel is an amazing card. Whether you time leap it or bind it for cost, that rewind is so good. And reprint art is amazing.

With all the binding you are doing in Fang decks, Tigar's choice call is real good. Better than, like, Gunnergear or Timepiece, so might as well even if you don't like it.

Starda is essentially a 10k vanilla and especial interceptor. Interesting card, to say the least.

Emenbarla is really nice. Easy +1 if she's in the bind zone and can snipe off starters or get rid of annoying Grade 1s.

Mutee... Oh my god she's adorable. Anyways, it's just a 10k booster, albeit it's an improvement on the old 6k base ones, so I don't think I'd want to run it. But it does give Rebellion, Bind Time, and Demiurge more offensive power when they swing.

Meow Meow Worker's just hand filtering on a 6k base. I'd rather not, but you can go ahead if you like it.

Chronoscommand
Chronoscommand is my favorite Gear Chronicle unit, and I'm soo happy that they got supported. Field wipes for days.

Ephemeral-wand Dragon's pretty sweet. His first skill lets him get +10,000 offensively or defensively for pretty cheap and his second skill lets you get out Revolution without striding into Chronoscommand first. Perfect G3 to go along with Eagle.

Extended Magne Dragon's not too shabby. Gets +2000 whenever you rewind a unit and gets +2000 whenever your opponent has 1 or less Rearguards. Yeah, Iron-claw's probably better, but this has 9k base. And you might as well run both.

Ishme's pretty cool, being a Stacia clone. More offensive for Chronoscommand decks, which they sorta lacked before.

Gear Peacock's triggered time leap isn't bad. And he's another target for Gear Eagle, so ye.

Urge is a 13k Beater 10k Interceptor... sorta. Chances are your opponent is gonna try to rebuild his field after Chronoscommand Or Revolution, so the intercept is sorta dead. I don't recommend it.

Gear Owl Stopped at Dusk is a great card. It mitigates OG Chronoscommand's cost by quite a lot and totally worth using.

Progress Second is just great. Can't be sent back to deck by Revolution and after your opponent gets board wiped he can time leap himself to toolbox anything you want from your deck. Also toolboxable by Upstream.

Legion
Legion Gear Chronicle... I give props to Bushiroad for trying, but no matter how much you support it it's useless if the Legions suck they aren't gonna see play.

Sorrow Divider. Bad. His on-ride is a possible +1 and his Legion skill is essentially just Ruin Disposal's with an extra Counterblast 1 and some hand filtering. I get that it's meant to build up soul for Puzur-ili, but I'd rather just stick to spamming Ruin Disposal for that. It's nice that Ruin and Sorrow share a mate, though. I guess I could make a little funsie casuals deck outta it.

Puzur-ili reprint. Tom skill for Soulblast 2. Tom skill is good. If you can spare the soul, then go ahead. Definitely run in Legion builds.

Rimela's a Legion restricted on-call rewinder that's limited to Grade 1 or less. For a Counterblast... Yeah, Bushi, you gotta try harder than that.

Prompturret. Okay, bushi, you' getting closer. On-hit +1-2 ain't too bad. The soulblast cost is a bit counterintuitive with Puzur-ili, but whatever.

Agger would be so broken if Gears had good legions. Or if it were Cray Elemental. But nope. Gear legions suck.

Trumpeting's essentially free soulcharge and countercharge. Fills up soul for Puzur-ili, Prompturret, and Agger.

Verdict: Great set. Not much fluff commons or crap fillers, which I like. All of the foils are great, with a few exceptions, and you're sure to get your money's worth with boxes if you get them early enough.

I hope you liked this review of Gear of Fate and helped you decide whether to buy packs, boxes, or even cases of this set. Might buy a box of the English version, myself, and possibly record an unboxing for the YouTube.

Anyhow, see you in the next one!

  1. I'm not a gear chronicle player, but the trial deck is making me wanna pick it up and try it. What cards should I look for in the clan booster to help support the trial deck build with chronojet dragon g, chronojet tiger g, or the ZTBs?

    1. It really depends on what you want to build.

I'm gonna assume you're getting two copies of the Trial Deck.

From the Trial Deck, I see two obvious choices: ZTB Time Leap and Demiurge.

First off, Time Leap. The key cards in this set you would want for ZTB Time Leap are Delayed Blazer, Causality, Tick Away, La'ba-shim, and maybe Mesh-kia. Gear Groovy and Nextage are also some key cards you would want to get in the set if you can afford getting 2 Gear Groovy and 3 Nextage. Heteroround's also a nice tech-in if you want to, as well as Pandora.

If you're looking to build Demiurge, the GR himself is an obvious necessity. Then, you should look to get the good Idea-drones to support Demiurge, namely Prospathia, Diaperno Idea-Drone, Kaigomai, Chanomai, Anarchaea, Voltaro, and maybe Itel. Outside of Drones: Tigar, Lasina-bel, Gear Tabby, and some other Tiger support is good.

Outside of the set, you should aim to buy a few Ur-Watar and a copy or two of GTD-06. Melem and Upstream are icing on the cake.

  2. Althinios is a better card than you think. Gear Colossus doesn't have a good way to countercharge if you have zero open counterblast. Having a few in your deck allows you to open one up so that Voltaro can be used in combination with Prospatheia's GB1 skill.

    1. I'm not the best person to talk, but if you ask me, running out of all your CBs in as GC one game seems like a preety situational scene.

    2. Althinos is terrible. The Counter Charge isn't worth, especially in a deck that isn't CB heavy whatsoever. I play alot of Demiurge and trust me, you can't take that -1. If you ever have no CB to use you're managing your resources poorly.

If you want to solve CB problems I'd rather just tech-in Tear.
